By now almost everyone should have heard something about the National Broadband Network (NBN) currently being rolled out to trial areas around Tasmania but the real question that needs to be answered is What is the NBN, and what does it mean for Tasmanian businesses?
A really great little video of What the NBN actually is was played at the Tasmanian NBN forum held at the Grand Chancellor in November, 09′
They key piece of information in this video is that the NBN is not only a medium for broadband internet access to your home or business but a medium that can be used to transfer almost anything including 3D TV, Pay TV telecommunications infrastructure (VOIP, Video Conferencing etc.) and the next revision of what is now known as High Definition TV. It should also be noted that you can run multiple services over Fibre, each utilising a different colours within the Fibre Optic cable leading to your premises which is much more effocoemt than the current copper network using filters on your phone line to separate voice services and DSL.
Tasmanian businesses should also be aware that they’re in a very unique position having this technology available to them years before other states and territories in Australia gaining quite a large ‘head start’ for developing innovative uses and integrating this new technology into day-to-day business operation.
